U.S. President Donald Trump, after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome at Pope Francis' funeral, expressed deep frustration with Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine. Trump questioned President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to end the war, suggesting tougher "banking" and "secondary" sanctions against Moscow. The meeting marked the first face-to-face since a tense White House encounter where Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelenskyy for showing a perceived lack of gratitude for U.S. support.

On Truth Social, Trump lashed out at The New York Times and reporter Peter Baker for allegedly ignoring former President Barack Obama’s role in Russia's annexation of Crimea, blaming Obama and President Biden for the war’s origins. Trump emphasized that Ukraine had maintained a ceasefire for 44 days, while Russia continued its aggression. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy called the meeting with Trump "good," focusing on a full ceasefire and lasting peace. Both leaders expressed hope for tangible progress.
