Water is essential for overall health, yet many people don’t drink enough. Hydration supports digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, and even brain function. But how much water is really needed?

The common recommendation is eight 8-ounce glasses per day, but individual needs vary based on factors like age, activity level, and climate. The National Academies of Sciences suggests about 3.7 liters (125 ounces) per day for men and 2.7 liters (91 ounces) for women, including fluids from food.
Athletes, pregnant women, and those in hot climates may need more. A good rule of thumb is to drink when thirsty and monitor urine color—pale yellow indicates proper hydration. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and poor concentration, while overhydration can disrupt electrolyte balance.
Maintaining hydration is key to optimal health, so listen to your body and make water a priority in your daily routine.
