Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires and ordained in 1969, passed away on Monday at the age of 88. Following Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation in 2013, Bergoglio was elected the 266th Pope and chose the name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. His death has prompted a nine-day mourning period, after which the Cardinals will convene to elect the next Pontiff.

United States President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have announced their attendance at the funeral in Rome. Trump paid tribute on Truth Social, saying, “Rest in Peace, Pope Francis! May God Bless him and all who loved him!”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, remembering the Pope as a symbol of compassion and humility. India’s Ministry of Home Affairs declared a three-day State Mourning on April 22, 23, and the day of the funeral to honor the late Pontiff’s legacy.
