French President Emmanuel Macron told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday that the suffering of Gaza’s civilian population must end and emphasized that only a ceasefire could lead to the release of remaining Israeli hostages. Posting on X, Macron called for opening all humanitarian aid crossings into Gaza, where the UN has warned of a deepening humanitarian catastrophe amid weeks without aid.

Hamas recently claimed Israel proposed a 45-day ceasefire in exchange for half of the hostages. However, Israel’s demand for Hamas to disarm was deemed a "red line" by the group. Macron reaffirmed France's commitment to securing the release of all hostages and the demilitarisation of Hamas, while also expressing support for a political resolution through a two-state solution. He recently suggested France may recognize a Palestinian state during a UN conference in June, aiming to inspire broader global recognition of both Palestine and Israel to revive peace prospects.
