In a stunning election comeback, Mark Carney's Liberal Party won Canada’s federal election on Monday, aided by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Canada and a trade war that spurred nationalism. The Liberals were projected to win more of Parliament’s 343 seats, though it remained unclear if they'd secure an outright majority.

Trump's attacks on Canada's economy, including suggesting Canada should become the 51st state, infuriated Canadians, giving Carney’s party the momentum needed for a fourth consecutive term. The Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, failed to capitalize on discontent with former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as Poilievre's Trump-like rhetoric turned voters away.
Despite this victory, Carney faces challenges ahead. If the Liberals fail to win a majority, they may need the separatist Bloc Québécois to form a minority government. With the U.S.-Canada trade war and a cost-of-living crisis at play, Carney has vowed to protect Canadian workers through counter-tariffs and progressive policies.
