UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to critique U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly announced tariffs while acknowledging why his economic nationalism appeals to many. In a speech set for Sunday, Starmer will argue that while protectionism taps into real voter concerns, tariffs are not the solution and can be damaging in the long run. A spokesperson noted that “globalization is over,” and stressed the need for a more active and reform-driven government to address shifting global dynamics.

Starmer will highlight how free trade and mass migration—once core economic strategies—have failed to benefit many people, reinforcing the sense of disillusionment fueling support for Trump’s policies. Although Starmer has not yet discussed the tariffs with Trump, he spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday. Both leaders agreed that a trade war helps no one, but also asserted that “nothing should be off the table.” Trump's tariffs include a 10% levy on all UK imports.
