Iran has ruled out direct talks with the U.S., dismissing them as pointless due to Washington’s threats and mixed messages. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated Iran remains open to indirect negotiations but cannot engage directly with a country that “violates the UN Charter” and “constantly threatens force.” His remarks follow U.S. President Donald Trump's letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, delivered via the UAE, which called for talks but warned of military action. Iran’s response, conveyed through Oman, emphasized a commitment to regional peace.

President Masoud Pezeshkian echoed readiness for dialogue, but only on equal terms, questioning U.S. sincerity. Military chief General Mohammad Bagheri added Iran would defend itself decisively if provoked. The 2015 nuclear deal, which limited Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, collapsed after Trump withdrew the U.S. in 2018. As tensions rise, adviser Ali Larijani warned Iran might consider nuclear weapons if attacked.
